Lenten Series Part IV (Santa Veronica)

April 27, 2011

Photo above shows Saint Veronica in her Good Friday feature holding the censer in front of the Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in the town of General Trias.

Saint Veronica is the fourth saint on my Lenten Series Special. Saint Veronica was not mentioned in the Gospels but she is believed to be the woman that gave her veil to Jesus Christ for Him to use to wipe His forehead. He accepted Veronica's Veil and miraculously, when Jesus gave it back to her, the image of His face was shown on the cloth. Her story is celebrated on the Sixth Station of the cross.

During the Holy Wednesday Procession, Veronica is shown holding the Cloth with the image of the face of Jesus Christ. But during the Good Friday Procession, she is featured holding a censer. She is Fifth in line on the Good Friday Procession and the image of Saint Veronica is owned by Choleng Deseo of General Trias, Cavite

Lenten Series Part III (La Pieta)

April 26, 2011

The most famous depiction of the Lamentation of Christ or the La Pieta is also part of most Good Friday Processions. It is the image of the Virgin Mary carrying the dead body of Jesus Christ.

A famous example of the image of La Pieta was done by the Great Italian Artist Michaelangelo that is located in the Saint Peter's Basilica in the Vatican City. According to Wikipedia, Michaelangelo's Pieta is different from all his works since it is the only one He signed after hearing some visitors having the thoughts that it was done by a competitor. Also, Michaelangelo's last work is another Pieta but this time, Jesus' body is not on Mary's cradle but on Joseph of Arimathea's

The La Pieta which is fourth in line in the Good Friday Procession is owned by the Familia Olimpo also from the Town of General Trias.

Lenten Series Part II (Saint Nicodemus)

April 25, 2011

Saint Nicodemus was a pharisee during the time of Jesus Christ. Though he is a pharisee, he has always been in favour of our Lord Jesus Christ. Aside from accompanying Saint Joseph of Arimathea on gathering Jesus' body after He died on the cross, Saint Nicodemus was also mentioned in the Gospel of John that He once visited Jesus to listen to His teachings and also, when he stated the law about the arrest of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Statue of Saint Nicodemus that was used on the Good Friday Procession (as shown above) is owned by Ameer Olimpo, a native of General Trias, Cavite. Saint Nicodemus was third in line on the Procession after Saint Joseph of Arimathea. This was the First Good Friday Procession of Saint Nicodemus in the Town of General Trias.

Salubong 2011

April 24, 2011

It was 4:00 am when my brother woke me up to tell me that it is time to go the the Plaza to see the Annual Easter Salubong. Salubong in Tagalog literally means come across or meet at a certain point. This is an annual Filipino Catholic Tradition where there are two Processions, the ladies together with the Virgin Mary with the Black Veil and the Men together with the Risen Christ. They will roam around a certain route until they meet at a certain point in the Town Proper.

At the point where they will meet, Angels will start singing the Regina Coeli, a Latin Prayer which is substituted to the Angelus every Easter. It goes something like this:

Regina coeli, laetare, alleluia:
Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia.
Resurrexit sicut dixit, alleluia.
Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.
Gaude et laetare, Virgo Maria, Alleluia,
Quia surrexit Dominus vere, alleluia.

Then in the middle of the Celebration, a little boy will be reciting a poem about the Resurrection of Christ and the lead Angel will be removing the Black Veil of the Virgin Mary showing that the Virgin Mary has now rejoiced at the sight of His Son. After that, Christ and Mary together with all the devout parishoners will march together on their way to the Church at the sound of the karakol, a traditional Filipino Band March that is done and danced along the streets every Town Fiesta.

This is truly one of the best parts of the Holy Week in the Philippines, People gather to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ. Being a Christian, I have always believed that these are just rituals and commemorations that truly shows how rich the Filipino culture is and how relevant the Spanish People have influenced Filipino Traditions then and up until now.

Mabuhay si Hesus! Sapagkat sya ay muling nabuhay! At mabubuhay magpakailanman!
Long Live Jesus! For He has risen! And will reign forever!

Lenten Series Part I (Saint Joseph of Arimethea)

April 23, 2011
During the Good Friday, an Annual Procession of Saints are being held on almost all the Towns in Cavite. It is a very extravagant moment for the owners of the Saints because it is the time to expose the beauty of their Saints while reflecting on the passion of Christ.
The first Saint that I will be featuring is Saint Joseph of Arimathea. Saint Joseph of Arimathea according to the Gospels of the New Testament is the man that gave and donated his own tomb which is prepared and cleaned already for the burial of our Lord Jesus Christ when He died. Joseph lives in Arimathea in Judea and he is one fine, wealthy man. When Pilate assured that Jesus is dead, he then purchased fine linen (as shown by the saint's statue above) and went to Golgotha to take the Body of Jesus Christ down from the cross.
The Joseph of Arimathea Statue above is owned by Erick John Tiglao, native of General Trias. It was second in line on the Procession right after the "Death of Jesus Christ on the Cross".
This Lenten Series will feature the whole procession and will run until early May. My Brother bought me a Pro account on Flickr to solve my problem for the limited photos that's why I promised him that I will work harder in posting and deliver you all the freshest photos from Cavite. Thank you all so much for not getting tired and your continuous support to Cavite Daily Photo. God bless us all.

Foodcarts

April 21, 2011

Food Carts are very popular along the streets of Cavite. These foodcarts offer different snacks such as Turons (Banana Rolls), Ice Crumble, Meriendas and the most common just as the ones above, Squid Balls, Fish Balls, QuekQuek or Quail Eggs wrapped in flour, and different coolers such as Pineapple Juice and Sago't Gulaman or Cane Juice with Tapioca pearls and Gelatin.

Kids of all ages are very much delighted by the sights of these foodcarts. I can still remember my childhood days that I will insist on buying fishballs on these carts only if the carts are the ones made with Bicycles because I thought that if the cart is cuter, the food is so much tastier. Because before, only a few Carts are made with Bicycles and most of them are stalls that are stationed along the sidewalks. But now, just like Kuya Judy's food cart, most of the foodcarts are now on Motorcycles.

This is by the way my very first post using my "Niko" Nikon D3100 my new and very first DSLR Camera. I have been wanting one since I started this blog and now that I am earning, I guess it is a very good investment for me since I really really want one. Thus I offer all my posts to all my avid viewers here at Cavite Daily Photo and I will continue doing my best to give you the freshest posts from Cavite!
