Mimi Says Hi!

Mimi the Japanese Spitz, Cavite City

This cute dog is Mimi, a Japanese Spitz family member of my best friend from college Ralph (See his post on this blog's Guest Post Sunday). Mimi is a cheeky and noisy (just like most Japanese Spitz's) but very lovable dog. 

When Ralph moved to Ontario, Canada last year, it was hard for him to leave Mimi but he knows that his family will take good care of her. But sad news that was heartbreaking even for me was when I heard that Mimi passed away. It was very sad because we also had a Japanese Spitz for 12 years names Sally which has been with me in almost all my school years. Months ago while catching up with Ralph, he did inform me that his family got a new dog and also a Japanese spitz and they called it Mimi as well.

General Douglas MacArthur

Corregidor Island, Cavite City

Corregidor island is one of the most prominent spots in Philippine History during World War II. This was the spot were the American General Douglas MacArthur escaped in March 11, 1942. He reached the southern island of Mindanao after two days via a PT-20 boat, and flew to Melbourne, Australia together with his family and staff members. He was a Defense Advisor for the Philippine Army after he retired from the United States Military after serving in the first world war.

When he left the Philippines to escape the Japanese, he uttered the famous lines "I Shall Return". And true to his promise to the Filipino people, he did return and even led the Liberation of the Philippines from Japan in 1944-1945. He is regarded as one of the heroes of our country even if he is not a Filipino, which also strengthened the friendship between the United States and the Philippines, which was a commonwealth of the prior for a few decades.

Thank you for your service General MacArthur. You will forever be in the hearts of the Filipino people.

The Spirit Never Ends

The Christmas Spirit just never ends on the 25th Day of December especially here in the Philippines. Just like this LED Christmas Tree on Plaza Samonte at Cavite City Proper never fades as it continues to shine bright! The lights are still on, Carols still on the airwaves and the joy in everyone's faces are still aglow anywhere you go.

Christmas in the Philippines is truly the most celebrated and really the longest. Christ does live within all our hearts as we Celebrate and Commemorate his coming 2011 years ago. Merry Christmas Everyone!

Corregidor Island Series - Battery Way

As you can see, This place is another one of the many Batteries that can be found in the Island. In the photo above, you can see the communication room. This room is very much important because the soldiers here direct the soldiers on the canons the length and the angular displacement needed for the canons to be shot. Spotters are also located around the island and communicate here via telephone lines.

You can see in the photo above is one of the canons inside the battery way. As you can see, Battery Way is enclosed by a three sided thick wall (The communication room sevres as the fourth of the square). That's why it is very hard for these soldiers to launch their shots due to the enclosure of the Battery.

I hope you enjoyed my week-long Corregidor Island Series. We enjoyed the trip so much and I just hope that every viewer of my Series have felt the fun, awe and inspiration of scenes, structures and stories that were left by the war. Corregidor Island Series - View from the South Dock

You can see the very big stone, that is part of "The Rock", another name for Corregidor Island. As you can see, the beach is very clean and if you look in the water straight, you can see the sea floor. Fishes shoal along the shore in large groups. I took this photo while we are in the South dock, Boarding for the ferry ride back to Manila.

Corregidor Island Series - Old Spanish Lighthouse

This is the Old Spanish Lighthouse that is the only lighthouse that can be found in the entire Island. It was built even before the Americans invaded the country by the Spaniards. According to corregidorisland.com, At its current site, the original lighthouse was built by the Spaniards in 1836. Sixty-one years later a need for a much bigger lighthouse was conceived which led to the erection of another structure to replace the old one. However, the lighthouse was destroyed during World War II.

The current lighthouse was constructed on the same site at an elevation of 628 feet above sea level. Being the highest point in the island, visitors who climb up the stairs of the lighthouse can have a breathtaking view of Corregidor, Manila Bay, the South China Sea, and the neighboring provinces of Bataan and Cavite. Beside the lighthouse is a small gift shop where visitors can buy souvenirs.

Corregidor Island Series - Japanese Garden of Peace

The Japanese Garden of Peace is a memorial made for the Japanese Soldiers that died during the War. Hundreds of Japanese Soldiers died while fighting while many of them committed suicide as a sign of pride and honor. If I'm not mistaken, It was built during the late 70's or early 80's.

According to corregidorisland.com, this garden features a 10-foot high stone Buddha with a reflecting pool, a Shinto Shrine, and other Japanese soldier memorial shrines and markers. It is also used as a praying area for Japanese war veterans and the families and relatives of Japanese soldiers who served or were killed in Corregidor during World War II.

Also on display within the garden are anti-aircraft guns which are relics of the war. A small pavilion houses some Japanese memorabilia and World War II photographs. The construction of this garden was made possible through funds generated by a Japan-based private group.

Corregidor Island Series - Eternal Flame of Freedom

This is the Eternal Flame of Freedom Monument at Corregidor Island.This Structure was put in place to commemorate the recapture of the Philippine island by the United States in 1945. According to renewableenergyworld.com, California-based SunPower, which owns a manufacturing facility in the Philippenes, provided the solar modules for the project.

For the 60th anniversary ceremony of the recapture, PV panel manufacturer Sunpower helped to donate and install three 200 W panels and helped to install the system that will light the memorial from dusk to dawn. Other project sponsors and supporters include: U-Freight Philippines, the Department of Energy, the Corregidor Foundation and the Filipino-American Memorial Endowment.

The Eternal Flame Monument symbolizes the Flame of Freedom burning eternally. It is located behind the Pacific War Memorial Dome of Peace, and sits on a raised platform above a reflecting pool. Designed by Aristides Dimetrios, the sculpture commemorates the sacrifices and struggle by the US and Philippines to preserve freedom for future generations.

Corregidor Island Series - Bomb Hole

I know that this photo is not a good one but this is a very important shot of a very important place where a very important event happened. In the middle of the afternoon of December 8, 1941, General Douglas MacArthur was inside this building just a few blocks across the Mile-long Barracks when large fighter bombing planes roamed around the clear skies of Corregidor Island.

One of the first bombs that were thrown to mark the Japanese war to the Philippines were dropped there at that very hole in the middle of the stairway. During those times, the General is said to be just feet away from the spot were the bomb was dropped of. This is probably one of the most important holes that is present in the Island due to its historical traces.

By the way this is my 100th post! I'm so happy I've come this far! Thanks to God, my camera, to my stories and to the people who made this happen, all of you my blogging friends and viewers. Without you, this blog surely closed even from the start! God BLess us all and May I have a hundred more!

Corregidor Island Series - Battery Hearn

Battery Hearn, One of the First Batteries that we have visited. It features one large, I mean very large battery canon, and a spare battery just behind it. It is just one of the 23 Batteries that are installed in the Island.

The longest-range coastal pieces were the two 12-inch (305 mm) guns of Batteries Hearn and Smith, with a horizontal range of 29,000 yards (27,000 m). Although capable of an all around traverse, these guns were not effective for use against targets on Bataan due to their flat trajectories.

Corregidor Island Series - Mile-long Barracks

This is probably one of the Most famous Landmarks that you can know of Corregidor Island. It is called Mile-long because of its length but it is really not mile-long literally. It is built by the American Soldiers and were used by them during the Philipppines' American Period. They catered thousands of American Bachelor and Familied Soldiers. During the early Japanese Takeover of the Philippines, it was bombed by the Japanese Troops and you can see now are just ruins.

Let me give you a brief background of Corregidor Island courtesy of wikipedia.org. Corregidor is an island in the entrance of the Philippines' Manila Bay. Due to its position in the bay, it has served as a focal point for the naval defenses of the capital city of Manila. During World War II, Corregidor was the site of several battles and its fall to the Japanese forces was instrumental in the subsequent capture of the Philippines and the retreat of the United States in the early stages of the war. Currently, it is an important historic and tourist site and is managed under the jurisdiction of Cavite City.

The trip was a blast even if we are only five High-School Plas, I can say it was one of the best trips I have had in my entire life not because of the beauty of the Island, but also of the friends that I have with me and all the people that we have been with in the tour. maybe we were 200 all in all. I have seen many American, British, Asian and of course, Filipino Tourists that are very kind. To all those people who were with us in the tour, Thank you so much that we have shared that experience with you all!

And to Kuya who we knew from Dasma Bayan, I'm sorry I forgot to ask your name but thank you very much from all five of us for taking wonderful shots for us! We will never forgot the kindness you have shown especially in our first Corregidor Trip!

Back Again

Back again- to the sunny City of Cavite! Well, it was a very hot experience but not as hot since the last time I've been there just this last week! It was quite cloudy when it was about 4 in the afternoon. While I was biking here in town, I even got wet by the rain that suddenly pour while I was on road! It was a very tough day because after our Lumber closed at about 5 pm, We went to SM Dasmariñas to pay some bills!

Back again- to the old times. As you can see in the photo the roads and the schools that lined up where very old times but all I can say is that this picture doesn't even match the feeling whenever I go strolling around the City because everything is old and preserved which make the city a very lovely place to go around!

Megastar Ferry (Cavite City)

Well, The Title Tells is all! this photo show the terminal of Megastar Ferry that services Cavite City Hall - Mall of Asia. Wait! The shipwreck is not the ferry by the way! For just 60 pesos and sparing just 30 minutes, you can do your shopping spree all the way and get back for just another 30 minutes! Isn't that great! By the way, thanks to the people at the city hall they are so welcoming and even insisted to give us a schedule for the trips daily. They really are good promoters.

City on the Edge - Cavite City

As I woke up this morning, I thought to myself, what will be my next entry to this Blog? Then my father asked me as I went down to go to our Lumber downstairs, If ever I want to join him on delivering white Sand to Cavite City! Of course! I was so Delighted because unexpectedly, I could have a shot in there! So I rushed upstairs for my camera and went with him to Cavite City. By the way, my grandma owns a Lumber/Hardware Store here in Gen. Trias which is now more than four decades and running! Our Driver went home to Bacolod so my father temporarily is the Delivery Man.

The photo was shot just near the Church in San Roque, Cavite. I was blown away by its beauty. I asked my father about the building. He said that it is the Rojas Clinic. It has been there years ago and he also told me that when he was still going to College in SSC-R, The Upper Floor of this Clinic was once a busy Disco Bar. Today is also Araw ng Kagitingan! So let us pray for the heroes that risked their lives just to give us identity as FREE Filipinos!
