Most of the plants on my garden are ornamental plants, mostly orchids and bromeliads! But this little fellow is the only vegetable I have on my garden, It's a Mustard spout. Here in the Philippines and in most Asian countries, Mustard leaves are a common vegetable. I don;t eat them but since I grew and took care of this little mister, I would have to put it on my Sunday soup in a couple of weeks!
Have you tried Mustard leaves?
I´ve never heard of mustard leaves - what do they taste like? OK, dumb question, is it. Might the answer be "mustard"? ;-)
ReplyDeleteIn German it would be Mrs, by the way. I´ll have a look for seeds, thank you for sharing, dear Steve!
Not a dumb question at all dear Iris! Because it taste nothing like the mustard sauce that we add to sausages :) It's a little bitter version of the lettuce I must say, and also a little hardier to chew despite its crisp :)
DeleteOh! Mrs. Mustard. Now once I had Mister Mustard for Dinner, I would definitely start planting a Mrs. :)
Same thing was in my mind, I had also never tried this before. It looks and sound interesting might be someday I will try.
DeleteHello Manav! That is right my friend, it's a common veggie here but I grew up 30 years not tasting it yet HAHA
Delete...Mustard leaves as a vegetable is new to me!
ReplyDeleteTom when I was a kid I used to see these on the market and called them "Mustasa" and I thought it just shares the name of the mustard seeds, then when we started planting them last year on our garden, we neglected a few on our rooftop and after a few weeks, it grew a tall stem at the middle and it flowered! We were all very shocked and amazed (we never even thought of searching about mustard plants on youtube prior to that HAHA)
DeleteHMM, that sounds an interesting vegetable to have on hand... I wonder if it is related to comfrey or borage... old English herbs that are edible... it has a similar leaf
ReplyDeleteStay safe
Blessings
Maxine
I tried to search on google for comfrey and borage and you are right Maxine, the leaves are somewhat Identical. This one looks most closely to the Bok Choy :)
DeleteHello Steve,
ReplyDeleteThat's nice. Let's hope it brings you the right result.
It is very nice to do in your own vegetable garden.
Greetings, Marco
Thank you so much Marco! I am excited to eat it, maybe in a couple of week it will be ready :)
DeleteHello, I have never tried mustard leaves, are they dried first? Enjoy your day, happy weekend. PS, thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteYou chop it as it is Eileen and stir fry or just like what I'll do, add it to broth soup :)
DeleteHappy Weekend and it's always my pleasure to visit your blog Eileen!
Mustard Does Go Wild Around Here - Works Very Well In Tea Believe It Or Not - Drop A Leaf In Your Hot Water For About 10 Seconds Or Less - Keep On Keeping On Brother Man
ReplyDeleteCheers
Whoaw!!! I will do that tomorrow right away, I'll snip one of the leaves :) I love different kinds of tea, that will be a new one for me :) Thank you so much my brother Padre!
DeleteI never heard of eating mustard leaves. I just use the ground up seeds (I think the seeds). How do the leaves taste? I just read the Padres post and that is fascinating! Happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteYou are right Erika. On my side, I haven't used the seeds yet and I wanna try that what you said :) Happy Weekend Erika!
DeleteWe used to have hot mustard greens. They were great to add to salads. I'll have to try looking for them again. Have a wonderful day, my friend!
ReplyDeleteOh! I haven't seen them put on salads my friend Bill! But I'm sure it would taste good like lettuce :)
DeleteI have never tasted mustard leaves. I wonder what they are like -- you'll have to tell us!
ReplyDeleteI sure will Jeanie! I might harvest them next week :) So exciting!
DeleteYes, we had mustard when I grew up...mom just cooked it and we always had bacon with it.
ReplyDeleteRose you got me hungry! Anything with Bacon is a masterpiece to the taste!
DeleteI confess I haven't tried mustard leaves SQ, but I do like mustard that you add or spread with ham etc. Would it be a similar taste?
ReplyDeleteWe are the same dear Grace, I also love mustard as a condiment. They do not taste the same :) But the condiment comes from the seeds that comes from this plant :)
DeleteI have never tried mustard leaves! First I've heard of them too! Mr Mustard looks very happy though :-D
ReplyDeleteOh you should try them too if you get the chance to see some Ananka :) I am excited to try them next week when it's time to harvest!
